Jumilla, 30th January 2025. The Jumilla Wine Council is pleased to announce that in collaboration with WSET Global, it will be launching the first course for trainers from this renowned educational body to become educators for the wines of the Jumilla DO.

As part of a promotional and educational undertaking, this course will take place thanks to EU funding through its CMO aid measures for the promotion of third countries and will include international trainers with proven knowledge of the region, together with local vine growers and experts.  The course will be conducted entirely in English and will take place on 12th and 15th June.

The Jumilla Wine Council will receive in June a group of 15 wine educators from the prestigious WSET organisation, an educational body made up of global wine experts.

Beyond its objective of enhancing international wine educators’ knowledge of our region and having it passed on to their pupils, it also has a more ambitious aim; and that is to increase the amount of content written in texts and books on the theoretical aspects of the Jumilla DO region to the level that the wines deserve. Gaining recognition as the top wine region in south-east and central Spain being one such aim. Jumilla’s wines are of very high quality, reasonably priced and show genuine individual character, which makes them hugely attractive to consumers.

At the end of the intensive course, the first official titles of Educator for the Wines of the Jumilla DO will be awarded, thus completing the first step in the founding of the Jumilla Wine School, which will offer different official courses on the wines of the Jumilla DO, both in person and online and in bilingual English and Spanish formats.

Free online seminar “Discovering Jumilla: the cradle of the Monastrell grape”

As of today, the Jumilla DO will be offering an online seminar for the prestigious WSET Global organisation, which is open to all. In this online seminar, given in English by the Secretary of the Jumilla Wine Council, Carolina Martínez Origone, participants will learn everything about the wine region, including how its high altitude vineyards and deep limestone soils bring character and a distinct flavour to its wines. The Jumilla DO has unique terroir with diverse microclimates and landscapes, and with these aspects we will journey through a brief history of the region, exploring the uniqueness of Jumilla’s soil-types, the traditional organic vine-growing practised by its growers, as well as how Jumilla’s wine production has evolved.

About Jumilla DO

The Jumilla region has a wine-growing tradition dating back some 3,000 years, evidenced by the discovery of vestiges of vitis vinifera in the region (the oldest in Europe), along with utensils and archaeological remains. The appellation’s vines are planted at elevations ranging from 320 to 980 meters within mountain ranges rising as high as 1,380 meters. These form the boundaries of the appellation, from the extreme south-east of Albacete (taking in the municipalities of Hellín, Montealegre del Castillo, Fuente Álamo, Ontur, Albatana and Tobarra) to the north of Murcia province with the municipality of Jumilla. The appellation covers more than 20,000 hectares (77 square miles) of vines, most of them dry-farmed bush vines grown predominantly on limestone soils.

Old vines in the Jumilla DO cover more than 20% of the total surface area, with the Monastrell grape variety making up most of it (90% of the old vines). It is estimated that a large proportion of these old vines are ungrafted and cover at least 1,000 hectares, 89% of which are planted with Monastrell, followed by 6% Airén and 3% Garnacha Tintorera.
The climatic conditions in Jumilla, with annual rainfall barely reaching 300mm and over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, are highly conducive to organic farming, which is widely practiced in the Jumilla appellation.
