The results are in for the 34th Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI. “Wines from Eastern Europe impress – Top producers from all over the world shine at the Spring Tasting.”
The six-day tasting in the traditional city hall Saalbau in Neustadt/Weinstrasse, Germany, saw an impressive number of more than 250 wine experts coming from 55 different countries to the heart of the wine-growing region Pfalz, which is the second largest in Germany. Consistent and improved quality
Great success and prove for the consistent quality by Italian wines are the in total 639 awards (12 Grand Gold, 370 Gold, 257 Silver), given by the strict jury. Second place goes to Spain with 535 awards (7 Grand Gold, 302 Gold, 226 Silver), followed by Portugal (352 awards), France (296 awards), Germany (193 awards) as well as Austria (105 awards).
Once again, the number of awards given to “New World” countries like South Africa (95 awards), Chile (55 awards) and Australia (50 awards), sums up to a total of 288.
Over the last years MUNDUS VINI saw a strong improvement of the wine quality from Eastern European countries. This year especially wines from Moldova (3 Grand Gold, 56 Gold, 37 Silver) impressed the expert jury, followed by Georgia (83 awards), Romania (71 awards) and North Macedonia (42 awards).
“The Spring Tasting is always a very good indicator for the quality of the wines from the new vintage coming onto the market now. Mid-march we will hand-over the awards for the Best of Show wines to the producers personally on ProWein, the most important wine trade fair in the world. This is always a very special moment for the board and me, because during the tasting only the quality in the bottle is important. The jury has only basic information about the wines like vintage and grape variety, so focus during the judgement is completely on the quality in the bottle” – Christian Wolf, Director Degustation
