Today the results of the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon 2022 were revealed. An unprecedentedly high number of oaked Sauvignon Blancs were entered in the competition this year: 225, or a fifth of total entries.

1,120 entries from 23 producer countries competed in the 2022 Concours Mondial du Sauvignon – the largest and most significant international competition entirely dedicated to the Sauvignon grape variety. In addition to the Gold and Silver medals, the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon awarded special trophies to entries achieving the highest scores in special categories such as Sauvignon BlendOaked SauvignonSweet Sauvignon and Best Sauvignon in the Competition.

An unprecedentedly high number of oaked wines were entered in the competition this year – 225, or a fifth of total entries. Most of the oaked Sauvignon wines came from Styria and Bordeaux. And they performed extremely well, with 35% of them receiving medals.

In 2022, the top five countries by number of medals are France, Austria, Italy, South Africa, and the Czech Republic.

French Loire Valley rules

The region with the most accolades this year is the Loire Valley with 100 medals. Styria ranks second with 71 awards, and Friuli and Bordeaux share the third place with 22 medals each.
Within the Loire Valley the leading appellations are Touraine (34), Sancerre (23) and Pouilly Fumé (12). Touraine Chenonceaux performed exceptionally well, as 63% of entries from the appellation received awards.

The 2022 Denis Dubourdieu Trophy for the best Sauvignon in the competition was also awarded to a wine from Touraine Chenonceaux – the Domaine Jean Christophe Mandard Blanc 2020.

“As wine producers in AOC Touraine, it is a great source of pride for us to rank among the best Sauvignons in the world, says Thierry Michaud, chairman of AOC Touraine. “Our excellent results from the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon reward the expertise of winegrowers and demonstrate that Touraine is a great Sauvignon terroir.”

Sancerre also achieved a high success rate of 34% including the Revelation Loire trophy for the 2020 Caillottes by Joël and Sylvie Cirotte.

Styrian Sauvignon blancs

With 39 Gold and 32 Silver medals, Styrian Sauvignon blancs proved their excellence once again. Styria collected the most awards in the oaked category, with 42, as well as the 2022 Revelation Oaked Sauvignon trophy awarded to the Peter Skoff Sauvignon blanc Ried Kranachberg Reserve 2015. Nearly 60% of awarded Styrian wines are oaked.

“The terroir in the Styrian wine region is predestined for the Sauvignon blanc variety, allowing us to produce world-class wines across all 3 regions of Styria”, says Stefan Potzinger, chair of Styrian wines. “And when so many top winemakers focus on one variety, success is inevitable.”

Best Sweet Sauvignons and Best Sauvignon Blends

The best wine in the Sweet Sauvignon category comes from the Czech Republic – SKALÁK Sauvignon Slámové Víno 2015. Gold medals in the same category were also awarded to wines from Romania, Austria, Chile, the Czech Republic and Moldova. The Revelation for the best Sauvignon Blend was granted to the Greek Ktima Biblia Chora White 2021 – a blend of Sauvignon blanc and Assyrtiko.
