China and the Concours Mondial
Last year China was 6th on the CMB medal list, moving up to 5th this year. The 2018 host country posted an increase of 68% in medals, winning a total 131 (5 Grand Gold, 46 Gold, and 80 Silver) compared to 78 medals in 2017 (4 Grand Gold, 33 Gold and 41 Silver). The award-winning wines were produced in the regions of Ningxia, Xinjiang, Hebei, Shandong, and Beijing. The most awarded Chinese wines were made from international varietals: Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Marselan. The Revelation award for the Best Chinese wine in 2018 went to a Marselan wine from Xinjiang.
The Grand Cold Medals
In 2018, fourteen countries received Grand Gold medals compared to fifteen in 2017:
This year France is at the top of the list, whereas last year it was 3rd, with Spain and Portugal in 2nd and 3rd place. The only two countries from Southeastern Europe with a Grand Gold medal are Bulgaria and Greece. The host country China this year won five Grand Gold medals, compared to four in 2017, and just one in 2016.
Concours Mondial, some numbers
In 2018, 30.4% of organic and biodynamic entries won a Silver, Gold or a Grand Gold Medal (in 2017 that percentage was 24.6%). The most awarded organic wines came from Italy, France, Spain, China, Greece and Moldova. The best organic wine in 2018 came from Sicily, Italy.

The percentage of awarded red wines decreased slightly from 31.6 % in 2017 to 29.2% this year. The number of medals for rose wines stayed unchanged at 27.1%. The “Revelation Red Wine” was awarded to a wine from Italy; the best White and Rosé are from France.
54.7% of awarded wines sell for under EUR 8.5 (cellar door) which underscores their value for money. The most expensive medal-winning wines, in the 50 euros and above category, are Chinese (12 medals in 2018), followed by Spanish and Portuguese (each with 6 medals), and French wines (5 medals).
The two countries that entered wines for the first time in 2018, Albania and Kazakhstan, won 1 Silver, and 1 Gold and 2 Silver awards respectively.
The next CMB host country, Switzerland, posted a 16.6% increase in its total number of medals. The best Swiss wine in 2018 came from the Vaud region.
2018 has also been a remarkable year for Mexico. With a total of 32 accolades the country has received the highest number of medals in the history of its participation in the competition.
“Winning 2018 wine regions”, i.e. those with the highest number of accolades from the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, are Bordeaux (237 medals) and Languedoc-Roussillon (185 medals), followed by Rioja (117 medals), Apulia (103 medals), and Castile and Leon, where CMB was held last year (88 medals).
Several promotional activities are planned for awarded wines as a part of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles’ post-event programme, including presentations and tastings in China, Italy, South Africa, France, Belgium, Japan and the United States.
The next CMB will be held in….
The 25th Concours Mondial was held from May 10 to 14, 2018 in Beijing, China. Over 9,180 wines from 48 producer countries competed for a distinction. Some 330 judges from 50+ countries blind-tasted and scored the wines. The next CMB will be held from 2-5 May 2019 in the Swiss town of Aigle in the canton of Vaud. CMB is the only touring competition in the world, with 25 years’ experience, and is the only wine contest to perform quality control tests on awarded wines.
