🥂Esprit Nature NV 🍾Champagne Domaine Henri Giraud 🍇80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay - organically grown grapes on chalky soils🌱20% Aÿ Grand Cru fruit. Traditional method with 50% reserve wines. Without any stainless steel (only small oak barrels are used for this champagne) and with a minimum of interventions and sulphur. 🌳🗞The paper oak on the label relates to the fragility of life but also the capacity for humans to rebuilt it. This four-meter high paper tree spreads its shadow out in the heart of the Giraud estate. This monumental piece made from recycled newspapers evokes the fragility of Mother Nature facing the human activity.👉The color of the champagne is lemon with a golden glow. On the nose lemon, grapefruit, fresh hazelnuts, bread dough. The palate is a recall of the nose, but now accompanied by orange peel and smokey notes. The mousse is powerful with elegance and creaminess. Fresh acidity and a long finish with a silty mineralogy and a tiny touch of oak.🍴Great champagne to enjoy like it is, but also a great company with food. And the Champagne AOC for the sparkling wines.🧭 LocationChampagne is the most northerly wine region in France and lies within the Paris Basin.🌦 ClimateDue to its northerly position it means that the climate is both cold and harsh. It has a continental climate with marked maritime influences. Just about app. 1,680 hours of sunshine a year. Summers are warm, winters can be real cold even temperatures of -10°C. Champagne generally experiences about 60-80 days of frost each year! Rain falls year round.🪨 Soil:The soils of Champagne fall into 3 groups:- (Belemnite and Micraster) chalk- Limestone-rich marls (Montagne de Reims and Côte des Bar) Kimmeridgean marls (only Côte des Bar).- Sand and clay (Vallée de la Marne, Val de Reims, Côteaux Sud d'Épernay, Côte de Sézanne)🌱 Viti & ViniThere are four approved training methods for the vines here: Chablis, cordon both for Grand Cru & Premier Cru vineyards. 🤔About yesterday…👩‍💻Followed an interesting WOR community webinar: ‘How to become a wine judge’🇷🇴‘WOR’ is the Wines of Romania community, an initiative of the well-known Romanian wine expert Marinela Ardelean🎙Host Mihaela Cojocaru (DipWSET and wine educator) asked wine judge and writer Kathleen Smith (The Happy Vine) everything about judging at wine competitions.🥇Amongst others they spoke about the Turkish Wine Challenge, IWC, Glass of Bubbly, the Concours Mondial des Vins Féminalise and Mundus Vini.😇It was very interesting and I really feel lucky already being a wine judge in several wine competitions each year, especially hearing all those enthusiastic stories. 🇩🇪Silvaner Stettener Stein Auslese 2012, Weingut Am Stein, Franken, Germany🤩Wow what a wine! 🥂Bought this beauty at the spot some years ago. The enthusiastic owner and winemaker Ludwig Knoll welcomed us and showed us around. We tasted beautiful wines, from the barrel and from the bottle. (Swipe>)🌱Since 1990 he and his wife Sandra are in charge of the family company. Immediately after studying viticulture, Ludwig laid the first foundations for the conversion to ecological and later biodynamic farming.⛰The grapes for this wine come from Stettener Stein, one of the most exciting terroir vineyards in Franken. The steep, sheltered plots of vineyards with a gradient of 50% to 80% benefit greatly from the microclimate, which warms up very quickly due to the warm air masses rising up the rock face. The very skeletal, barren topsoil represents a large heat store and is difficult to root through. This forces the vines to develop deep roots over many years, which penetrate the karst character of the shell limestone, giving the wines great minerality and elegance. 🙋‍♀️And that’s what you find in this wine. A bright yellow colour despite its age. Beautiful nose with fresh white fruit and spring flowers. Very clean. On the palate pear, apricot, honey, lemon and a flinty minerality. 🤔About yesterday…👩‍💻Followed an interesting WOR community webinar: ‘How to become a wine judge’🇷🇴‘WOR’ is the Wines of Romania community, an initiative of the well-known Romanian wine expert Marinela Ardelean🎙Host Mihaela Cojocaru (DipWSET and wine educator) asked wine judge and writer Kathleen Smith (The Happy Vine) everything about judging at wine competitions.🥇Amongst others they spoke about the Turkish Wine Challenge, IWC, Glass of Bubbly, the Concours Mondial des Vins Féminalise and Mundus Vini.😇It was very interesting and I really feel lucky already being a wine judge in several wine competitions each year, especially hearing all those enthusiastic stories. 🇩🇪Silvaner Stettener Stein Auslese 2012, Weingut Am Stein, Franken, Germany🤩Wow what a wine! 🥂Bought this beauty at the spot some years ago. The enthusiastic owner and winemaker Ludwig Knoll welcomed us and showed us around. We tasted beautiful wines, from the barrel and from the bottle. (Swipe>)🌱Since 1990 he and his wife Sandra are in charge of the family company. Immediately after studying viticulture, Ludwig laid the first foundations for the conversion to ecological and later biodynamic farming.⛰The grapes for this wine come from Stettener Stein, one of the most exciting terroir vineyards in Franken. The steep, sheltered plots of vineyards with a gradient of 50% to 80% benefit greatly from the microclimate, which warms up very quickly due to the warm air masses rising up the rock face. The very skeletal, barren topsoil represents a large heat store and is difficult to root through. This forces the vines to develop deep roots over many years, which penetrate the karst character of the shell limestone, giving the wines great minerality and elegance. 🙋‍♀️And that’s what you find in this wine. A bright yellow colour despite its age. Beautiful nose with fresh white fruit and spring flowers. Very clean. On the palate pear, apricot, honey, lemon and a flinty minerality.
